B03 - Sources and Sinks of Gases in the Earth’s Critical Zone: in situ Sensors and Isotopic Constraints

B03 seeks to understand how the suite of gases, detectable in the subsurface and dissolved in groundwaters, reflects environmental conditions and functional biodiversity of the subsurface Critical Zone. We will (1) develop new concepts for enhanced Raman gas spectroscopy as a tool for simultaneous quantification of a range of gases in the subsurface, (2) continue measurements of how gases and isotopes vary with time in the Hainich transect and new sites with sandstone parent material, and (3) use controlled laboratory experiments to quantify how microbial activity, substrate supply, and environmental conditions control patterns of production and consumption for a suite of gases and isotopic signatures.
