B02 - Evolution of Water and Matter Cycles within the Earth’s Critical Zone

B02 investigates how the superposition of small-scale water input variation (precipitation passing heterogeneously through the canopy) and subsoil patterns (due to soil hydraulic properties and water uptake by roots) interact to decrease or enhance area-average flow and transport into the deeper Critical Zone. This research will involve a parallel approach using (a) a conceptual model to understand the consequences of those subscale processes for total fluxes and their variation at the landscape scale, and (b) direct measurements of water fluxes and constituents at specific microsite locations.
