The chemical diversity and metabolic activities in the Critical Zone (CZ) are within the focus of A02. With a multi-technique mass spectrometry-based platform, we specifically identify marker molecules for structural and functional analysis. We will further identify metabolic patterns for the elucidation of biogeochemical processes in the CZ. Using these markers, we will perform incubation experiments with microbial consortia, in order to identify the key players responsible for characteristic metabolic transformations. The ultimate goal of this project is to use information from chemical structures to identify the processes that cause the pattern observed in different sampling depths and at different sampling sites of the CZ.
