A01 - Phages as Vectors and Indicators of Biological Information: Consequences for Microbial Communities and Functions (PHAGE II)

Bacteriophages (short: phages) are viruses that infect specific host bacteria. A01 focuses on the consequences of transport processes for virus-host interactions, microbial communities, and their functions in the Hainich CZE. Being primarily based on laboratory experiments and using assembled phage-host pairs or field samples, we will (i) follow phage-dispersal and use marine phages as tracers, (ii) evaluate the effect of transported phages on interaction networks, bacterial community compositions, and functions, and (iii) address the potential of natural chemical compounds in the CZE (e.g., the mycosphere) for prophage induction. Our project will apply various methods, e.g., enzymatic assays, viral metagenomics, stable isotope techniques, or chemical microscopy.
